Negotiate From Strength — Know Your BATNA Before You Talk

The single biggest factor in any negotiation isn't charm — it's your walk-away. Knowing your BATNA (best alternative) before you sit down changes everything: salary, deals, deadlines, scope.

Negotiate From Strength — Know Your BATNA Before You Talk

The idea

BATNA stands for Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement — in plain terms, your walk-away: what you'll do if this deal doesn't happen. It's the most important thing in any negotiation, because your power comes from having a real alternative, not from talking well. Someone with a strong BATNA (another offer, another vendor, the ability to wait) negotiates calmly and won't accept a bad deal; someone with no alternative caves. Before any negotiation — salary, a contract, a deadline, scope — you work out your BATNA first. It sets the floor you'll never go below.

Sahil used to accept whatever rate clients offered — he had no plan B, so he caved every time.

Before his next pitch he worked out his BATNA: two other leads in his pipeline and a day rate he'd keep busy at anyway. That was his floor.

When the client lowballed, he calmly held his rate and named his timeline. They agreed — at 35% more than he'd have accepted before. The lines didn't change; his alternatives did.

"Your power in any negotiation is your walk-away. Know it before you sit down — and never go below it."

Do the challenge

  1. 1Pick a real negotiation you're facing

A salary or rate, a contract, a deadline, a scope request — anything you'll need to negotiate soon. You'll work out your BATNA for this specific one.

💡 BATNA isn't just for money. "I'll take the other project" or "we'll wait a month" or "I'll do it in-house" are all walk-aways that give you power.

  2. 2Define your BATNA — your actual plan B

Ask: "If this deal doesn't happen, what will I realistically do instead?" Write the concrete alternative — another offer, another client, waiting, doing without. The stronger and more real it is, the more power you have.

  3. 3Set your walk-away floor

From your BATNA, decide the line you won't cross — the lowest number or terms you'd accept before your alternative becomes the better choice. Decide it now, calmly, in writing. This is what stops you caving in the moment.

  4. 4Strengthen your BATNA before you talk

The best move is often to improve your alternative first: line up another lead, get a competing quote, build a buffer so you can wait. A stronger BATNA quietly does the negotiating for you.

💡 I have a negotiation coming up: [describe it — salary / contract / scope / deadline]. Help me work out my BATNA: (1) what are my realistic alternatives if this doesn't happen, (2) which is strongest, (3) what walk-away floor should I set, and (4) one thing I could do beforehand to strengthen my alternative. Be specific.

BATNA — Negotiate From Strength

THE NEGOTIATION:
[salary / rate / contract / deadline / scope]

🚪 MY BATNA (what I'll realistically do if this deal doesn't happen)
• Alternative 1: ______________
• Alternative 2: ______________
• Strongest one: ______________

📏 MY WALK-AWAY FLOOR (decided NOW, calmly)
• I will not accept below: ______________
• Because below that, my BATNA is the better choice.

🔧 STRENGTHEN MY BATNA BEFORE I TALK
• One thing I'll do first: [line up another lead / get a competing quote / build a buffer]

IN THE ROOM:
• Hold the floor. Stay calm — I have options.
• If they go below the floor → I choose my BATNA, no hard feelings.
