The Reversible-Door Test โ Decide Fast on Cheap Bets
Bezos's one-way vs two-way doors: some decisions are irreversible (one-way) so decide slow. Others can be undone (two-way) so decide fast. The skill is classifying your decisions to set the right speed.

The idea
Jeff Bezos taught Amazon to classify every decision as either a one-way door or a two-way door. A one-way door is irreversible: firing someone, quitting your job, shutting down a product, moving to a new city. You can't easily undo it, so decide slowly, carefully, with lots of input. A two-way door is reversible: starting a side project, trying a new tool, taking a course, testing a feature. If it doesn't work, you can undo it, so decide fast and try it. The magic is not in the decision itself โ it's in knowing which type you're facing. Most people decide everything slowly (waste time) or everything fast (take bad irreversible bets). The skill is matching the speed to the reversibility.
Who is this for?
Priya Chatterjee
Product Manager ยท Hyderabad
Priya agonized over everything: trying tools, changing routines, pitching ideas. Then she learned one-way vs two-way doors.
Side projects? Two-way (easy to stop). Job change? One-way (take time). She shipped her first app in 6 weeks and moved 10ร faster.
"I was deciding everything slowly. Now I ask: can I undo this? If yes, I move fast."
What you'll get
One irreversible decision classified as one-way
A career or life choice that can't be undone โ you know to decide this slowly.
Three reversible decisions classified as two-way
Cheap bets that can be undone โ you're ready to decide fast and try them.
Permission to move fast on experiments
You'll stop overthinking two-way decisions. Try it, learn, reverse if needed.
A decision framework you use for everything
From now on: is this one-way or two-way? Decide at the right speed.

Do the challenge
1List 3 decisions you're facing right now (big or small)
Could be: start a side project, change jobs, learn a new skill, hire someone, try a new marketing channel, invest money.
2Classify each as one-way (irreversible) or two-way (reversible)
Ask: Can I easily undo this in 3 months? If yes, it's two-way. If no, it's one-way. Write both down.
๐ก I have 3 decisions: 1. [decision] 2. [decision] 3. [decision] For each, is it a one-way door (irreversible) or two-way door (reversible)? How would I know?
3For each two-way decision, decide today and try it this week
Set a decision deadline of 1 hour, not 1 week. If it's reversible, the time you save by trying it beats the time you spend deciding.
4For each one-way decision, set a slow-decision process (30 days minimum)
Sleep on it, ask 3 trusted people, write out the impact. One-way decisions get time. Two-way decisions get speed.
