Zoom Out, Then Commit — Your 5-Year Vision in One 90-Day Goal
A 5-year vision without a near-term goal is a daydream; a 90-day goal without a vision is busywork. Today you connect them — and commit to the one 90-day goal that moves you toward the life you want.

The idea
A 5-year vision is a vivid picture of the work and life you want; a 90-day goal is the nearest concrete step toward it. On their own, each fails: a vision with no near-term goal stays a daydream, and a 90-day goal with no vision is just busywork that may point nowhere. Connecting them is the move — you zoom out to set direction, then zoom in and commit to the single 90-day goal that, if achieved, would most move you toward the vision. Long-range clarity plus near-term commitment is how careers actually compound.
Who is this for?
Divya Krishnan
Senior Developer · Bengaluru
Divya felt successful but adrift — busy for years with no sense of where it was leading.
She wrote a 5-year vision (leading a small engineering team building climate tech), then asked: what one 90-day goal moves me there? Answer: ship one open-source project and write about it.
She committed to that single goal and started that week. Ninety days later she had the project, three blog posts, and two interview calls for exactly the kind of role she'd pictured.
"A five-year vision tells you where. A ninety-day goal gets you moving. You need both — and you need to choose just one goal."
What you'll get
A vivid 5-year vision
A clear picture of the work and life you're aiming at — not vague "success".
ONE committed 90-day goal
The single near-term goal that best moves you toward the vision.
The first concrete step
The very first action you'll take this week — no waiting.
Long-range + near-term aligned
Your next 90 days now point somewhere on purpose.

Do the challenge
1Write your 5-year vision — vivid, not vague
Picture your work and life in 5 years in concrete detail: the kind of work you do, the role, the impact, how your days feel. "Senior" is vague; "leading a 5-person team building X, working remotely, known for Y" is a vision you can aim at.
💡 Use your Career North Star (Day 28) as the seed. The vision is the North Star made specific and lived-in — what it actually looks like day to day.
2Ask: what ONE 90-day goal moves me there most?
From the vision, work backwards. Of everything you could do in the next 90 days, which single goal would move you most toward it? Not five goals — one. The constraint is the point; one committed goal beats five half-tried ones.
3Make it specific and measurable
Turn the goal into something you can clearly hit or miss in 90 days: "ship one open-source project + 3 posts," "land 2 client projects," "complete the X certification and apply to 5 roles." Vague goals can't be committed to.
💡 My 5-year vision is: [vision]. The one 90-day goal I'm considering is: [goal]. Is this the single best 90-day goal for that vision, or is there a stronger one? Make it specific and measurable, and tell me the very first action I should take this week.
4Commit + take the first step this week
Write the goal where you'll see it daily, and do the very first action within the next 7 days — however small. A goal you start this week is real; a goal you'll "begin next month" rarely happens. This is your one decision: which 90-day goal, starting now.
