Your Monthly Career Audit β€” Five Questions, One Decision

A weekly review keeps you on track; a monthly audit keeps you on course. Five honest questions, run once a month, turn a month of activity into one clear decision for the next one.

Your Monthly Career Audit β€” Five Questions, One Decision

The idea

A monthly career audit is a 20-minute session, once a month, where you step back from week-to-week execution and look at direction. It's built on five questions: What did I actually achieve? Where did my time really go? What did I learn? Am I closer to my North Star? And β€” the only output that matters β€” what is the ONE decision I'll make for next month? A weekly review (Day 25) keeps you on track within your current plan. A monthly audit checks whether the plan itself is still right. Without it, you can spend months being productive in the wrong direction and never notice.

Vidya Nair

Senior Manager Β· Kochi

Vidya hit every weekly target and still felt stuck β€” busy, productive, going nowhere she'd chosen.

She ran her first monthly audit: 5 questions, 20 minutes. The honest answer to "Am I closer to my North Star?" was no β€” her time went to firefighting, not strategy.

Her one decision: delegate the recurring reporting, protect 2 strategy mornings a week. One decision a month changed her trajectory more than any to-do list.

"You can be perfectly on track and completely off course. The monthly audit is how you tell the difference."

Do the challenge

  1. 1Block 20 quiet minutes, once a month

End of the month or first Sunday β€” pick a fixed time so it actually happens. This is a thinking session, not an admin task. Put it on the calendar as recurring, monthly.

πŸ’‘ Pair it with something pleasant β€” a coffee, a quiet cafΓ©, a walk first. The audit only works if you'll actually keep doing it, so make it something you don't dread.

  2. 2Answer the five questions honestly

Achieve: what did I actually finish? Time: where did my hours really go (vs where I meant them to go)? Learn: what did I learn or get better at? Heading: am I closer to my North Star than last month? These four set up the fifth.

  3. 3Make ONE decision for next month

This is the whole point. From your honest answers, choose a single, specific change β€” something to start, stop, or shift. Not five resolutions. One decision you'll actually act on.

  4. 4Write it where you'll see it

Put your one decision somewhere visible for the month β€” a pinned note, a calendar reminder, the top of your task app. A decision you can't see is a decision you'll forget. Next month, start the audit by checking: did I act on it?

πŸ’‘ Here are my answers to a monthly career audit. Achievements: [..]. Where my time went: [..]. What I learned: [..]. My North Star: [..]. Based on this, here's the one decision I'm considering for next month: [decision]. Is this the highest-leverage change I could make, or is there something more important my answers point to? Be honest and specific.
